At first glance, Janacek's opera "The Tale of the Clever Vixen" appears to be a folk tale or a fairy tale. Janacek was inspired by a story by Rudolf Tiesnofriedek that appeared in a Brno newspaper, and in the script he adapted it himself, the "quick-eared vixen Bystroushka" follows her instincts, captures her prey, falls in love with it, and is finally shot dead by a human. The heroine's death is neither a fatal illness nor a wounded heart, but rather a natural cycle, a tribute to and awe of nature's repetitive death and rebirth. The music, interspersed with Moravian folk songs, perfectly accompanies the Czech dialogue, vividly portrays the characters, and the singers' lively interactions are superb.
