Jacqueline du Pré was a cellist who gained attention at a young age for her passionate performances. After developing multiple sclerosis and retiring in her late twenties, she passed away at the age of 42. “The Cellist,” created by choreographer Kathy Marston—renowned for her beautiful storytelling—depicts the life she lived at full speed and became a major topic of conversation in Japan as well. Lauren Cuthbertson, who captivates audiences with her graceful presence and dance, plays the title role, the personified cello is played by the brilliant Marcelino Sambé, and the conductor—her cellist husband—is portrayed by the popular Matthew Ball. Against the backdrop of numerous masterpieces for the cello, the story of these three characters’ encounters and partings—all centered on music—unfolds as a beautiful yet sorrowful tale. Jerome Robbins, the genius behind musical masterpieces such as *The King and I*, *Fiddler on the Roof*, and *West Side Story*, choreographed “Dances at a Gathering” for the New York City Ballet—a unique work in which five pairs of men and women dance in various combinations to Chopin’s piano music, beautifully depicting a rich tapestry of human relationships. Choreographer Ben Hughes, a protégé of Robbins, has assembled a stellar cast—including Royal Ballet superstar Marianela Nuñez, the currently in-demand Francesca Hayward and Federico Bonelli, William Bracewell, as well as Fumio Kaneko and Ruka Akuri, to create a magnificent production.
