Description:
A collection of works by American composer Peter Lieberson (1946-2011). At the age of 30, Lieberson left New York and began studying Tibetan Buddhism, which he had long been interested in. Later, in Massachusetts, Lieberson became immersed in Buddhist thought, supervising a meditation program known as "Shambhala Training," which greatly influenced his way of thinking. The Six Realms" is a work born of Buddhist thought, symbolically depicting a world in which all living things repeat the cycle of reincarnation, performed by an amplified cello and orchestra. Songs of Love and Sorrow" is a collection of songs conceived for his second wife, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. He is best known for "Neruda's Songs," which was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra shortly after its premiere. However, work came to a halt when Lorraine died and the composer himself was declared ill.After a bit of time, Lieberson worked on the piece again and was finally able to complete it in 2010. The same "Neruda" poem was used in a song cycle written for Finley, who died in Tel Aviv the year after the premiere of the work.
