Luther = The Destroyer, a one-act opera for baritone, piano, and ensemble. The New York Times praised the work as "daring and unconventional. Based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Austrian author Thomas Bernhard, "Der Untergeher," the only character in the play is the unnamed narrator. As the title of each scene suggests, the story revolves around Glenn Gould, but the composer Lang asserts, "This story is not about Gould, Horowitz, or classical music. The work, which explores ways to appreciate beauty and at the same time learn about being alienated from it, premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2016, followed by its West Coast premiere at the Los Angeles Opera.
