[A revival recording of a little-known opera from the same period as Gluck, which questions its true value] Born in Dorgogne, Lemoine made his debut as a conductor on a provincial tour, but left that position in 1770 for Germany, where he studied with Graun and Kilnberger in Berlin before making a second debut as an opera composer. He made his debut as an opera composer He began living in France with an opera singer he fell in love with in 1782. In Paris, where popular foreign composers such as Gluck and Salieri were at the height of their popularity, Lemoine's works had a reputation for being stiff, but his second tragedy, "Phèdre," was a moderate success. He continued his studies in Italy, and after returning to Japan, he had several more successful works. However, his name has been completely forgotten, and "Phèdre" is the first world recording of his work to see the light of day. The story is based on the tragedy of Racine, which was inspired by Greek mythology. The setting is the royal palace of Tézet, where his wife, Phèdre, falls in love with his stepson, Ippolito, and tragedy ensues. In addition to Wan Roy, a soprano who has been pulled from the ancient and French repertoire, other seasonal singers bring to light the charms of this little-known work. Naxos Japan
