Description:

Baroque cello virtuoso Coxe, with his gamba in hand, unravels a collection of 16th-century bass string works! Baroque cellist Bruno Coxe has been pursuing the bass-string music of each era, without being satisfied with the formula of the "cello". This is the result of his collaborators, such as musicologist Marc Vanhsweijk and antique instrument maker Charles Richet, who have both excelled in the study of bass strings. More recently, he has been collaborating with the viola da gamba virtuoso Guido Balestracci, and has been actively performing works from around the 17th century, when the history of the cello and gamba were inseparable. This is a remarkable new recording of Coxe's work. Coxe, who has explored the true nature of the bass string world of the 17th century with works such as Frescobaldi's canzonas and the brilliant gumba player Tobias Hume, goes back even further in time to the 16th century, when various bass string instruments existed side by side, before the cello was even invented. The emphasis is on Diego Ortiz, a Spanish-born Roman master known as a composer for gamba. Coxe, with the help of the gifted Balestracci (who has just released a unique new album with arpeggione!) ), Coxe will explore the world of 16th-century bass string music, playing a variety of instruments of the gamba genus created by Charles Richet. His approach to album production, in which he mixes contemporary music with organ, harpsichord, and viola (a Renaissance stringed instrument), is also highly appreciated. We look forward to another album of his vigorous bowing and careful interpretation. Naxos Japan
