Description:
Bjarnason was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra in 2019. The second album he has worked on with the orchestra is a collection of works by leading contemporary Icelandic composers, including Thorvaldsdottir and Sigfusdsdottir, who were also featured on his previous album (DSL-92213). All of the works evoke the vast nature of Iceland and the human qualities that inhabit it, while Toumason's and Pálsson's compositions shed light on human existence, relationships, and community. In Toumason's piano concerto, for example, the soloist and orchestra maintain a moderate distance and equal relationship, a perfect balance that neither checks nor isolates the other. This album contains the basics of Icelandic music, which may not be flashy, but is preserved by the deep bonds between the inhabitants and their special relationship with the earth, sky, and climate.
