Vienna in the 19th century was in transition from Classical to Romanticism. Shunsuke Matsuo vividly depicts the two trajectories spun by Giuliani and Merz and their brilliant sounds. The charm of Viennese guitar music lies in the beauty of the transition from the Classical period to the Romantic period. For this reason, the idea of a collection of works by Giuliani and Merz has remained unchanged since I first began thinking about this year's programming. In fact, the two musicians never met in Vienna, and were born in different places and styles. The only thing they have in common is that they were both active in Vienna for about 15 years and left behind a legacy of music that has been refined to a level of expression that only the guitar can achieve. Their music, which is completely different from each other, has its own charm and resonates strangely on the strings of the guitar.
