Description:
Gaul under Roman rule around 50 BC. The Roman governor, Polione, is in love with the priestess Norma, daughter of Orovezo, the chief of the Druids, and they have two children in secret. However, Pollione changes her mind about the young priestess Adalgisa, and when Norma learns of this, she vows revenge out of jealousy.... This work is one of the masterpieces of bel canto opera with beautiful melodies throughout the entire work, especially the famous "O pure goddess" sung by Norma in the first act. The main role of Norma requires a polished technique, an attractive voice, and skillful characterization, and is known as one of the most difficult works in the repertoire of sopranos. In this 2016 production at the Teatro Macerata, Norma was sung by Maria Jose Ciri, a young singer from Uruguay who attracted attention when she sang "Tosca" in Japan in 2015, and who also had a lively exchange with veteran singer Ganassi at this performance. The fantastic stage set and lighting were also highly acclaimed.
