Description:
Pii World in Full Swing! The Super-Super-Super-Thrilling “The Tales of Hoffmann” Is Now Available on DVD! A powerful opera production is here! “The Tales of Hoffmann,” directed by French director Olivier Py—who it’s no exaggeration to call Europe’s most popular director today. Py is a director who enjoys charismatic popularity for his fearless exploration of taboos and his deep delving into drama. His productions are always major talking points, but *The Tales of Hoffmann* in particular garnered huge acclaim for masterfully recreating the “abnormal world” Offenbach intended—a world that had become trite as mere fairy-tale entertainment. In particular, Pii’s signature intense eroticism is on full display here. I was stunned by Petitbon’s Olympia, who from a distance looks completely naked! Even more so, the act featuring Giulietta, set in a Venetian brothel, is teeming with naked men and women! It is characteristic of Pi that the eerie and fantastical world Offenbach sought to create emerges so brilliantly from such a provocative stage. First performed in 2001 and revived numerous times since, this is one of Pii’s signature productions. The cast is exceptionally strong, featuring Belgian tenor Rao as Hoffmann, the well-known Olympia played by Petitbon, Swiss soprano Harnisch as Antonia—who has been highly favored by Abbado in recent years—and Swiss mezzo-soprano Wesseling as Giulietta, who is also active in Baroque opera. Furthermore, Davan’s razor-sharp musical direction—shaped by his studies under Boulez and his expertise in contemporary music—is a perfect fit for Pii’s staging. The production uses the Ezer edition and runs for nearly three hours. Bonus footage includes interviews with the cast. *This DVD has been rated by the FSK (Germany’s film self-regulation body) as unsuitable for children under 6 years of age.
