Tabakov's Eighth Series of Recordings of the Complete Shostakovich Symphonies! This is the eighth in the series of recordings of the complete Shostakovich symphonies, the life's work of the famous Bulgarian conductor Emil Tabakov. Nos. 4-11 and 13 have already been released, and No. 13 and Nos. 5 and 6 were selected as semi-selected recordings in the monthly review of Record Geijutsu magazine. This release is a coupling of two completely contrasting works: "May Day," No. 3, which is a statement of the unity of all workers in the world, and "Song of the Dead," which was written in the composer's later years. Tobaccoff's performance of No. 3, which is still criticized as a propaganda piece, is a gorgeous and powerful one. And the best of all is the "Song of the Dead". Tobacoff, who himself is a composer, realizes this work, which can be said to be the twin of Mahler's "Song of the Earth," with the utmost precision and delicacy, as if it were chamber music. The normally gruff and brash Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra plays with great introspection and depth here. As in the past, this is a session recording made in a studio. The sound quality is excellent. Japanese commentary is included. Tobu Land System
