The bright, clear tone has been further refined and has acquired great power. The sound is tremendous in the development of the first movement, the instrumental fugato of the fourth movement, and the famous chorus, where the music heats up to a high tension. The timpani in the second movement, driven like a wedge by the intense tension, the beautiful and detailed violin variations in the third movement, and the trombone, which explodes with its presence in the latter half of the finale, are also worthy of special mention.Here is the amazing true value of this great masterpiece, a performance that moves along at a clean tempo but is at times bizarrely crisp.
