The 17th Thomas cantor, Gotthold Schwarz, starts recording Bach's cantatas with the St. Thomas Church Boys Choir of LeipzigSt. Thomas Church Choir, the oldest boys choir in the world, has been working with Gotthold Schwarz, who took over as Thomas cantor in 2016, on a recording of Bach's The St. Thomas Church Boys Choir was founded in the 12th century with the completion of St. Thomas Church. Bach was the music director of the church and composed music while teaching the boys. Bach is known for his energetic efforts to compose a new cantata for the church every week. The tradition has continued over the years, and Gotthold Schwarz, the 17th Thomas Cantor, said on the occasion of this recording, "Recording Bach's cantatas is a great challenge in my work and in my life. I have been working with this work for decades, and each time I discover something new. I am sure this is reflected in this recording. No. 33 was written for the 13th Sunday after Trinity in 1724 and premiered on September 3 of the same year. No. 17 is a cantata for the 14th Sunday after Trinity in 1726, and was probably premiered on September 22 of the same year. No. 99 was premiered on September 17, 1724, the 15th Sunday after Trinity.Soloists include German soprano Julia Sophie Wagner, alto and tenor Stefan Kahle and Wolfram Radtke, who were both members of the choir, and baritone Tobias Berndt, who also studied with Fischer-Dieskau.
