Music is the friend of a lifelong journey." A documentary on Chailly's life as a conductor and his personal life, including Grieg with Lars Falkt. Riccardo Chailly will end his contract with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra after the 2015/16 season. Although he will initially leave his contract mid-term, which runs through 2020, Chailly will continue to hold an important post as he has been Music Director of La Scala in Milan since 2015 and will also serve as Music Director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra for five years beginning in 2016. Andris Nelsons is set to succeed him at the Gewandhaus Orchestra, and all eyes are on the new chef here as well.This DVD includes a scene in which Chailly looks back on his childhood and talks about his father and family, how he faces the score in his study, time with his family, rehearsals, memories of Abbado and Karajan, his thoughts on La Scala, and his relationship with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, The film also offers a glimpse into Chailly's conducting career and personal life. In the film, Chailly says, "A conductor needs concentration and physical and mental energy. A person without mental energy cannot cope with the constant current between conductor and orchestra. The relationship with the orchestra is a very delicate one." The film also shows scenes of Chailly reflecting on his past relationships with the orchestra on the podium, allowing us to understand his musical thinking and enjoy the music he creates even more.
