Bruckner's first and second works are now available in a 2-CD set! This series focuses on the form of Bruckner's first written score, and this time, the first draft is used in the performance, which clearly shows the ambitious experimentation of the late writer who started his career as a symphonist over 40 years old. No. 1 "Linz manuscript" (1868) is characterized by younger and rougher strokes than the "Vienna manuscript" (1891), which was substantially revised after the composition of No. 8. The premiere, conducted by Bruckner himself, was favorably received by the audience and can be considered a successful work that paved the way for the symphonist Bruckner. Roth's performance, which is full of the power of a rampaging horse and primordial strength and at the same time supple, conveys the true joy of this piece. On the other hand, the second piece, also in C minor, has many beautiful melodies.The first draft in 1872 was said to be "unplayable" and had to be revised, and the first performance was given in 1873. The major difference is that the order of the movements of the Adagio and Scherzo is reversed, and the 1872 manuscript has a movement arrangement similar to Beethoven's "Ninth". The performance is a brilliant one, with clear singing but without losing the three-dimensionality of the music, as if the light shines on the work from various angles. (King International)
