Toshio Hosokawa (1955-), who studied composition in Germany under Yun-Ikwa, Brian Ferneyhough and Klaus Huber, is one of the leading contemporary Japanese composers with works based on traditional Japanese culture and music and their aesthetic and spiritual foundations, The Violin Concerto (the third in the Landscapes series), in which Ervin Arditti, founder of the Arditti String Quartet, gives a brilliant solo performance; the Flute Concerto "Per Sonare," in which he switches between piccolo, flute, alto flute, and bass flute, and performs a variety of techniques; and the Saxophone Concerto "Perche Sonare," in which he plays the flute in a different position from his other instruments. The three works are "Per Sonare", a piano concerto that has been reworked from the saxophone concerto (1999) into a piano version, and "To the Sea", a piano concerto. Tokyo M-Plus
