Description:

Grimal plays the complete Ysaÿe works with a full tone! The French virtuoso Grimal has recorded all of Ysaÿe's violin sonatas. Ysaÿe (1858-1931) was a leading figure in the violin world during the 19th and 20th centuries. A teacher, player, and composer of great renown, Ysaye's mentors included Isaac Stern, and one of Stern's students was Regis Pasquier. Pasquier was also Grimal's teacher and the first violinist to record Ysaÿe's sonatas. This performance reminds us that the spirit of Ysaÿe has been passed down through the generations to the masters of our time. The performance is a must-see, with moments of fullness. Ysaÿe's Sonatas for Solo Violin, op. 27, consisting of six sonatas for solo violin, are notoriously difficult pieces. Ysaye, who was himself an excellent violinist, wrote these sonatas with a strong awareness of Bach's unaccompanied sonatas and partitas (Ysaye's autograph score also contains notes on the tonality of each Bach piece). Each piece is also dedicated to a famous violinist or a highbrow disciple of Ysaye's. No. 1 is dedicated to Szigeti, No. 2 to Thibaud, No. 3 to Enesco, No. 4 to Kreisler, No. 5 to Matthew Klickbohm, Ysaye's senior brother who was also the second violinist of the Ysaye String Quartet, and No. 6 to Manuel Quiroga, a senior Ysaye brother. Some of the pieces are quotations from Bach, some from Gregorian chant, some in the style of Baroque, some in the style of Spanish dances, and some in the style of Impressionist paintings, all with a rich individuality and superb technique. <David Grimal (violin) was born in 1973 and began playing the violin at the age of five. He studied at the Paris Conservatory under Régis Pasquier. In addition to his activities as a soloist, he formed the conductorless ensemble "Les Dissonances" in 2004. In 2008, he was awarded the "Chevalier". In addition to teaching at the Saarbrücken University of Music and Performing Arts, he conducts master classes all over the world. He plays a Stradivarius "ex-Roederer" made in 1710. King International
