Description:

Bach's Sonatas for Violin and Obbligato Harpsichord An extremely prestigious ensemble with a rich bass part. The rich bass part with the participation of Coyne is also an attraction. J.S. Bach's "Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord" were composed between 1718 and 1722. While rooted in the tradition of church sonatas, the keyboard instruments are present as truly equal interlocutors with the violin, transcending their role as accompanists through concerto and counterpoint writing, demonstrating Bach's virtuosity and originality in pushing the limits of this genre. Through these works, Bach redefined the baroque trio, and in so doing, provided a decisive evolution for chamber music in the 18th century. In this recording, harpsichordist and fortepianoist Paolo Zanes and violinist Liv Heim are joined by Christophe Cowan, world-renowned master of the first, second, and sixth works and the king of baroque cello, who swells the bass melodies to even richer heights. This is in accordance with a 1725 manuscript by Johann Heinrich Bach, which states that the viola da gamba may be played over the left-hand part of the keyboard part, and we believe it is appropriate to perform Nos. 1, 2, and 6 in this configuration. It infuses the sonatas with lively expression and depth. It is a fresh and historically informed approach to Bach that combines scholarly accuracy with a contemporary flair. This is a brilliant and masterful performance that reveals the richness and subtlety of Bach's genius. Violinist Liv Heim was born in Berlin. She studied at the Juilliard School and is active as a baroque and modern violin and viola player in European old music ensembles such as Les Arts Florissants. Paolo Zanes, harpsichordist, studied with Rousset, Patrick Cohen, and others, and has served as assistant conductor to William Christie and Gardiner; in 2017, he founded Le Stagioni, an ensemble that changes composition at will.Christophe Cowan studied with Navarre and also studied with Arnoncourt and Savard, and was a longtime member of their ensembles, as well as teaching with the Mosaic String Quartet and at the Schola Cantorum in Basel and the Conservatoire National de Paris. He has also taught at the Schola Cantorum in Basel and the Conservatoire National de Paris. PARATY
