The Cardinals Music is a British early music a cappella group formed in 1989 under the leadership of Andrew Carwood, who was also a member of the Tallis Scholars. Having completed their 13-volume collection of William Byrd’s sacred music—a project they’ve dedicated themselves to as a lifelong endeavor since their formation—Cardinals Music now shifts its focus from 16th-century England to 16th-century Spain! Francisco Guerrero (1528–1599) is a representative musician of Spain’s Golden Age, standing alongside Victoria and Morales—composers who, unlike their contemporaries, did not travel to Italy but continued to contribute to the development of music in their native Spain. The harmony of the Cardinals Music ensemble pairs wonderfully with Guerrero’s masses and motets, which feature beautiful melodies and superb harmony; in particular, the soaring and refined soprano, along with the bass and baritone voices that support the upper registers with their rich resonance, are truly remarkable.
