Carlo Jesualdo, unlike other composers of the time, was an aristocrat of tremendous wealth. Most musicians of the time were hired hands, and it was rather daring to be a nobleman and a musician at the same time, but Jesualdo was proud, almost obsessive, in his musical achievements. And while in those days publishing musical works was done to improve one's status and conditions, to find new work, or simply for the money, Jesualdo did it purely to preserve his fine works for posterity. And in his later years, when he was certain that his life was ending, he converted a room in his castle into a printing house where he produced and printed the ultimate collections of madrigals, Books V and VI, and the Responsorium of Holy Week.It is nothing less than his attempt to leave to posterity what he proudly considers to be the greatest masterpieces of his lifetime after he became ill.
