The essence of Bach's chorales in every note, as revealed by Arall's limpid and eloquent organ The seventh installment of Arall's Bach project, the Orgelbüchlein (Organ Pieces), has been attracting much attention not only from Bach fans but from music lovers all over the world. The "Chorale Preludes" were written between 1708 and 1717, and are played by the organ before the congregation chants the chorales in worship services. The 45 pieces in Bach's Orgelbuchlein are based on chorale melodies and are arranged according to the church calendar: Pentecost, Christmas, New Year, Passion, and Easter (from BWV 635 onward, various chorales not based on a specific feast day). The chorale melody appears almost as it is in the upper voices, while in the lower three voices, the motives and figures skillfully express what the lyrics sing, requiring the player to have a deep understanding of the chorale itself, its text, and related scriptures. Bach himself described the chorale as "a guide for beginning organists to develop the chorale in various ways and to master pedal playing," but the actual content and required techniques are more like a flood of superb technique and complex, brilliant counterpoint, with the chorale melody emerging from the flood. Arall's performance is full of mysterious charm, with a lightness that softly envelops the listener even in the brilliantly pounding passages, and above all, the various meanings of the notes seem to emerge clearly.
