Pianist Paul Lewis continues to expand his international Schubert touring schedule, which concluded in Japan in early December 2014 with a successful performance of Schubert's Three Great Songs in Tokyo and Nagoya (featuring singer Mark Padmore). His next new album is a combination of Mussorgsky and Schumann. This is Paul Lewis's first Schumann, and his perfect virtuosity in Mussorgsky is also noteworthy. These two works are a seemingly strange combination, but they share the same musical world that transcends the "title". Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" was inspired by a painting that impressed his friend Victor Hartmann at an exhibition of his paintings, but the music goes beyond the world of Hartmann's images, sometimes ambiguous, sometimes not always matching the images of the painting. The music is sometimes ambiguous and does not always match the images of the paintings.As for Schumann's Fantasy, the work initially had evocative titles for each movement. Eventually, these were removed, and each movement is now accompanied only by Schlegel's poem as its motto. This is Schumann's masterpiece, a world on a grand scale that transcends the world of images evoked by the titles. Paul Lewis, with his limpid and untainted tone, brings the composer's voice to life in this performance, which will refresh your image of these two 19th century masterpieces and question their true musical value.
