Description:
A collection of rare recordings by pianists from around the world who left their mark in the monaural and stereo eras. 21 CD box set. Limited edition. Performances range from legendary pianist Clara Haskil to Brazil's Guiomar Novaes, with Benno Moiseivich and Egon Petry documenting the latter stages of their careers, and Jörg Dames and Nina Mirkina recording the remarkable early years of their careers. Piano performances from Germany, Russia, France, Hungary, Romania, the United States, and other countries also show the characteristics of their respective national schools, but the individualistic artistry of Haskil and Moiseyevich cannot be overlooked. Jörg Dames is now recognized for his performances of Bach and Beethoven, but his mastery of Franck and Fauré has been forgotten; his four solo LPs recorded by Raymond Leventhal at Westminster in 1956, which he had been unable to play for several years before, were a This is a monumental album that marks his return to the studio. The repertoire ranges from Beethoven sonatas and Scriabin preludes to well-known encores.Excerpts from these LPs have been previously released on CD, but this is the first time the entire album has been included. This set includes Jörg Dames' Faure, Edith Farnady's collection of Liszt and J. Strauss waltz paraphrases, Raymond Leventhal's Beethoven sonatas and encores, and Nina Mirkina's Scarlatti and C.P.E. Bach sonatas, Egon Petri's "Moonlight" sonatas are being released on CD for the first time. Petri's "Moonlight" Sonata is also included on this CD, as well as the "Pathetique" and "Passion" sonatas from the original "Moonlight" LP, the "Hammerklavier" sonata and Busoni's "Counterpoint Fantasy", recorded at the same session in June 1956. Also on CD for the first time are two single-disc LPs by Guiomar Novaes for Decca, USA in 1963 and Carlo Zecchi for Westminster in 1955. And three Chopin mazurkas by French pianist Yola Gular are being released for the first time. Booklet includes commentary by piano expert Mark Ainley and archival photos. Newly remastered.
