Known as a member of Beings, Amba’s album *EyesFull* is clearly and instinctively linked to a return to her hometown of Kingsport, Tennessee, and to the guitar—the first instrument she ever picked up. The album features gritty, laid-back acoustic blues, interspersed throughout with explosive feedback-laden electric guitar riffs and the sweet tones of Appalachian folk. For an artist who has already established herself as one of the most exciting saxophonists to emerge from New York’s avant-garde scene, this marks a remarkable transformation. The drums on this album are handled by Jim White, a drummer known for his work with The Hard Quartet and The Dirty Three, as well as for his role in Pavement alongside Stephen Malmas. For a long time, Amba believed that pure instrumental music could save the soul and lead to a higher spiritual state without words, but eventually, words found their way in. When playing the saxophone, Amba often felt as if she were being carried up to heaven. Her body would burn with passion, tears would well up, and the music would open a direct circuit to the divine.
