Joyce DiDonato is overwhelmingly popular and talented. This album, recorded live at Wigmore Hall in 2017, is a showcase for her expressive range. The centerpiece is Heggie's new song cycle written for DiDonato, "Camille Claudel - On Fire," which, like Heggie, a storyteller who has incorporated various social issues into her own work, has shocking content based on the memoir of the talented sculptor Camille Claudel, The accompaniment is provided by a string quartet. The Brentano Quartet also plays an important role in this album, performing all of the songs by Richard Strauss and Debussy in "string quartet" versions, which are exquisitely blended with DiDonato's voice. The quiet beauty of "Morto adagio sempre cantate doloroso for string quartet" by Lecoux, a composer who died young, will leave a strong impression. The encores of the recital were Strauss's "Tomorrow" and Gruber's "A Clean Night". The encores were Strauss's "Tomorrow" and Gruber's "Sei Shi Kono Yoru," a gentle reminder that the night of the recital was during the Christmas season.
