Description:

Arcadia String Quartet presents Weinberg: String Quartet No. 3! The Arcadia String Quartet, winner of the 2014 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition! The exciting Romanian quartet Arcadia String Quartet presents the third volume of the string quartets of Mieczyslaw Weinberg (1919-1996)! Weinberg's music is like a gleam of light surrounded by an unknown darkness, and it became our goal to diminish its shadow." says the Arcadia String Quartet. Their "Weinberg: String Quartets Vol. 1" (CHAN20158) was named "Record of the Week" by BBC Radio 3 Record Review and nominated for the ICMA (International Classical Music Awards) 2022 in the chamber music category. Weinberg's creation of 17 string quartets, spanning nearly half a century from his student days in Warsaw to the end of his career in Moscow, demonstrates his development as a composer more clearly than any other genre. Two works from contrasting periods have been selected for this work: No. 4, written in 1945, and No. 16, written in 1981.No. 4, composed shortly after Weinberg moved to Moscow, is highly abstract and shows Weinberg's artistic maturity and affinity with his close friend Shostakovich. No. 16, composed in the winter of 1981, is dedicated to his sister, who lost her life during the Nazi invasion of Poland. This one is harmonically complex and impactful, in a compositional style typical of Weinberg's later years. The Arcadia String Quartet was founded in 2006 by students of the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Romania, and has won the 2009 Hamburg International Chamber Music Competition, the 2011 Almere International Chamber Music Competition, the 2012 Wigmore Hall London International String Quartet Competition, and the Winner of the 2014 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, the quartet is one of the most exciting string quartets of its generation.
