Description:

Buchbinder's first album for Deutsche Grammophon is a trio of diabelli! Buchbinder, a well-known Beethoven player, has just released his first album for Deutsche Grammophon, which sheds new light on the "Diabelli" in this Beethoven year. Earlier in his career, Buchbinder recorded Beethoven's Diabelli Variations, but this time he invited 12 contemporary composers to compose new variations on Diabelli's themes. Penderecki, Sichedrin, Brett Dean, Max Richter, Jörg Wittmann, Toshio Hosokawa, Leila Auerbach, Brad Loveman, Christian Jost, Philippe Manoury, Johannes Maria Staudt, and Tan Dun, twelve distinguished composers. Buchbinder's new commissions reflect the stories behind Diabelli's own original works, and the result is an album of three new variations: Diabelli's own attempt, published in 1824, Beethoven's famous "Diabelli Variations," and the newly created Variations. The new album is a collection of three different variations. In 1819, Anton Diabelli, a composer and music publisher, wrote a 32-bar "German Dance," a precursor to the waltz, and commissioned 50 composers to write one variation each. Among the composers sent requests were Czerny, who was only 8 years old at the time, and Liszt, who was 11. Diabelli received works from Schubert, Mozart's son Franz Xaver, Hummel, and others. Beethoven also received a commission, but he refused to compose it, perhaps because of the banality of its subject matter. Four years later, however, Beethoven wrote his own great work of 33 variations on Diabelli's theme. Later praised by conductor Hans von Bulow as "the epitome of Beethoven's genius," it was the composer's last large-scale piano work, and is still performed by pianists everywhere today as a supreme work of art.
