A 3-CD set of a compilation of works by Hungarian composer Kurtág is a 3-CD set containing all of the works for chorus and ensemble by Hungarian composer György Kurtág, who was born in Romania in 1926. It is no exaggeration to say that few contemporary composers are as deeply respected as Kurtág. This album contains all of Kurtag's works for ensemble and for ensemble and chorus, recorded between March 2013 and July 2016 at the Musikgebouw in Amsterdam and the Philharmonie Hall in Haarlem. The well-prepared Asko/Schönberg Ensemble gives a clear performance that captures the essence of the well-honed works. The booklet includes an interview with conductor Reinhard de Leeuw, comments by Gerge Kurtag, and lyrics for all songs.In an interview, de Leeuw describes how he spent about 20 years carefully studying all of Kurtag's works, one by one, with the advice of Kurtag and his wife. The works are arranged in the order in which they were composed, and the transition of Kurtag's compositional techniques can be heard in this valuable album. Universal Music/IMS
