The composer Castello is little known except as a wind instrumentalist in Venice, and his "Modern Sonatas Concertate," published in 1621 and 1629, respectively, are important for understanding the reality of his early sonatas. These were collections for one to four voices with bass continuo, and the sonatas included here are for one or two of those voices. Holloway's endlessly beautiful baroque violin. Jane Gauer, the Dulcian forerunner of the baroque bassoon, sings the beautiful main melodies of these important works as if she were a baritone singer. Montelsen, who is also the music director of Concerto Copenhagen, succeeds in creating a beautiful sounding space for the bass continuo by effectively adding delicate chords that accompany the main melody instrument rather than emotionally.
