During part of 1959-1960, pianist Jon Mayer, bassist Chuck Israels, and drummer Arnie Wise formed a trio that played for a few months in Europe, sometimes with clarinetist Perry Robinson making the group a quartet. At the instigation of Jordi Pujol of the Fresh Sound label, the trio had a recorded reunion 43 years later. Happily, all three of the musicians are heard still very much in their prime. Their brand of bop and hard bop is appealing and they sound as if they had been playing together steadily through all of the years, even though they had rarely seen each other since 1960. Jon Mayer is generally the lead voice with fine support offered by Chuck Israels and Arnie Wise. Although all of the songs other than Mayer's "Catalan Cakewalk" were written decades ago, many are superior obscurities well deserving of being revived. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow|
