Washington National Opera's new recording of Blue, a contemporary opera with a libretto by Tazewell Thompson and music by Janine Tesori, focuses on the theme of racism in America today. Blue" tells the tragic story of an African American police officer whose son was killed by a fellow officer during a racial protest. Strongly resonating with the Black Lives Matter movement, this remarkable work realistically depicts the current state of African American family life on the operatic stage, and was awarded the Best New Opera Award by the North American Music Critics Association in 2020, while the Financial Times, a British business newspaper, called it "an Hailed as "an extremely remarkable new opera," it was session recorded at the John F. Kennedy Center in 2021. The music was written by Janine Tesori, a composer active in various aspects of the current American music scene, including the music for the film "The Last First Love" starring Richard Gere. The music, full of beauty and eloquence, underscores the importance of the work's theme.
