Beethoven: Collection of Woodwind Chamber Music—Consortium Classicum, 1993–95 Digital Recordings. This four-CD set compiles chamber music for woodwind instruments—works that are heard less frequently than, for example, string quartets. It features 10 pieces, including his “Septet”—a divertimento-style chamber work—and the overture from *Fidelio*, arranged for the “Harmonie Musique” ensemble (wind octet and double bass), which was popular at the time, as well as a restored minuet movement, resulting in a five-movement version of the *Wind Octet*; the *Trio* and *Variations* for the rare combination of two oboes and an English horn, which he composed after being deeply moved by the performances of a pair of renowned brothers of the time; and the *Quintet* for the extremely rare combination of oboe, three horns, and bassoon—a total of 11 pieces—can be enjoyed through the superb performances of the Consortium Classicum, led by Krecker, who is well-regarded for his work with woodwind-focused ensembles as well as for his restorations and revivals.
