The CPO label, driven by a passion for actively unearthing masterpieces lost to history, is launching yet another new series. The first release in this series, titled “Musikerbe Thuringen” (Thuringia’s Musical Heritage), features what is believed to be the oldest surviving version of the “St. Matthew Passion” in central Germany. Very little information remains about the composer, Rothe, other than that “he was taught music by his father, the cantor of Roswein, and by Ludwig Gerber, the organist of Sondershausen, and went on to enjoy a successful career as a composer and violinist.” It is believed that the musical style of his “St. Matthew Passion” was likely typical of the Thuringian style of the time. The simple sound of the violin, viola da gamba, and basso continuo (played here on the organ), combined with the singing of the vocalists—who never raise their voices—truly touches the heart. The crystalline beauty of the final chorus is enough to bring tears to one’s eyes. Naxos Japan
