Although largely unknown to the general public, Bernard Walton (1917–72) was one of the finest orchestral musicians of his time. Unlike his contemporary, the virtuoso Jack Braimer (1915–2003), he avoided media attention and left behind almost no solo recordings; yet he is revered by other musicians as a “true professional.” He was a master who carried on the traditional lineage of Charles Draper (1869–1952), the founder of modern British clarinet technique, his nephew Haydn (1889–1934), and their disciples, such as Frederick Thurston and Leonard Kell. Walton spent 35 years performing with two orchestras: the London Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra. He might have secured the position of principal clarinetist with the Berlin Philharmonic had he wished to do so. Karajan, in particular, held him in high regard; in 1955, when he assumed the position of chief conductor and artistic director of the Berlin Philharmonic, he said the following to Walter Legg, the founder of the Philharmonia Orchestra: “If we weren’t old friends, I would immediately bring Walton over to the Berlin Philharmonic.” This was because, having conducted the Philharmonia for six years, he knew that there was virtually no other musician in Europe like Walton. Walton was recognized as a rare performer who possessed both the ability to bring out the very best in a piece under any circumstances and a masterful sense of balance in the concert hall. From 1954 until his death, he taught at the Royal College of Music, exerting an international influence through his further analysis of technique and his quest for understanding.
