Description:

Orchestral and chamber works by Kalevi Aho! Also includes Contrapunctus XIV string orchestra version of Fugue Technique! Finland's Kalevi Aho is known as a symphonic composer, but he has also composed concertos and chamber music for a variety of instruments, as well as numerous arrangements and adaptations of works by Sibelius and other composers. On this new album, he presents three of his 21st century compositions in the presence of the composers. Concerto for Guitar and Chamber Orchestra" is dedicated to the Finnish guitarist Ismo Eskelinen (1971-). It was composed in the image of Eskelinen's music and technique, and also explores new possibilities of tone and sound beyond traditional techniques. The seven movements, "Introduction," "Allegro molto," "Interludio," "Andante cantabile," "Misterioso," "Presto," and "Epiloguq," are performed without interruption. The "Quintet for Horn and String Quartet" was commissioned by the Finnish horn player Ilkka Pupputi.Puputi is the player who premiered "Solo X," which was recorded on Aho's "Solo (Solo)" (BIS SA-1446), performed by Marie-Louise Neunecker. It is written in four movements in various moods: mystical, whimsical, dramatic, and dance-like. Contrapunctus XIV" is a work in which Kalevi Aho, unsatisfied with his various previous attempts at the unfinished "Contrapunctus" from J.S. Bach's "Technique des Fugues," completes it as "his music" without deviating from the Bach style. Several versions were made, including the "organ" version (BIS SA-1966), which was premiered by Jan Lehetra, as well as "string quartet" and "woodwind ensemble" versions. The first recording of the string orchestra version was this performance by Jón Ståhlgård and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra. King International
