Building on its 80-year history as a home for musicians at the forefront of the jazz world, Blue Note Records has released the self-titled debut album by ARTEMIS, a supergroup comprising seven of the most highly acclaimed musicians in contemporary jazz. Featuring pianist and musical director Renee Rosnes, tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana, clarinetist Anat Cohen, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, bassist Noriko Ueda, drummer Allison Miller, and featuring vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant, ARTEMIS—a septet of visionary bandleaders and composers—produces a powerful sound. The band was formed three years ago at Rosnes’s suggestion for a European festival tour. “I chose musicians I respect and wanted to make music with,” she commented. “When we played together, I realized we had great chemistry. That’s how ARTEMIS was born.” The group’s distinctive feature lies not only in the gathering of seven unique artists but also in its multigenerational, global lineup, with members hailing from the United States, Canada, France, Chile, Israel, and Japan. “Each member of ARTEMIS has a unique personality and brings the diversity the band needs. That’s what makes life interesting and music compelling,” Cohen commented. “The Greek goddess Artemis is an explorer, a torchbearer, a protector of young children, and a goddess of the hunt,” explained Jensen, who came up with the band’s name. “I feel her character symbolizes the energy and broad musical tapestry with which the band Artemis delivers music to the moon, the stars, and beyond.” Although they’ve only been together for three years, they’ve already been featured in Vanity Fair and NPR’s Jazz Night in America, and have performed on some of America’s most prestigious stages, from Carnegie Hall and the 92Y Tisch Center for the Arts to the Newport Jazz Festival. This album is a magnificent nine-track set featuring compositions and arrangements by each of the band’s six instrumentalists. ARTEMIS unfolds with dynamic flow, resulting in a work that is surprisingly diverse yet cohesive as a whole. “The group’s identity emerged organically,” says Rosnes, noting that ARTEMIS discovered a thrilling vision for the band early in its life. “This band consists of seven leaders who each have strong personal perspectives but share a unified concept,” she explains. 180g heavyweight LP.
