The trio SR9, formed in Lyon about 10 years ago, has released Bach and Baroque dances by the marimba trio on the naive label, and now they are going to try their hand at Ravel and other works on the evidence label. This time, the trio will perform works by Ravel and others on the evidence label. The main work is "Gaspard at Night" for three marimbas. The original is the most difficult piano piece in Ravel's oeuvre, but it is a treat to hear it recklessly performed only with marimbas. Although Ravel was a French composer, he is said to have been influenced by Spanish and Russian music. Here, the second movement of Rachmaninoff's cello sonata with its abstruse sensations and Falla's flamenco-style Spanish dances are beautifully rendered on marimba. Also included is a gentle lullaby by Ravel's mentor, Fauré, featuring not only the three marimbas, but also Shani Dirka, a Sri Lankan virtuoso well-known at the Folle Journée Festival for Ravel's "Spanish Rhapsody" festival, Astrig Silanosian for Rachmaninov's sonata, and, for Fauré, Canadian The festival is also notable for the participation of a splendid guest, singer-songwriter Kylie Christmanson.
