Inspired by the brass-rock movement—which swept through the American rock scene in the late 1960s with bands like Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago—the Sons of Champlyn emerged from San Francisco. Frontman Bill Champlin joined Chicago in 1981 and became a key figure in ushering in a new golden age for the band. The Sons of Champlyn released three albums on Capitol Records between 1969 and 1971, but failed to achieve commercial success and had their contract terminated. However, the band secured a contract with Columbia Records, which was enjoying strong sales thanks to the brass-rock movement, and in 1972 released their fourth studio album, *Welcome to the Dance* (original title: *Welcome to the Dance*), featuring the five core members excluding the brass section. To promote the album, they performed a studio live show in San Francisco, which was broadcast on PBS Radio (U.S.). This album is a live recording based on that broadcast, featuring primarily songs from their new album at the time, along with cover songs and new tracks. They developed a brass-rock sound distinct from that of the aforementioned Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago. Their unique, original sound was further refined, hinting at the band’s next step forward.
