Description:
MATSULI, which has been releasing a series of unknown South African masterpieces, presents two Afro-psychedelic jazz masterpieces by Harari a.k.a. Beaters, one of the country's most famous bands! The Harari (a.k.a. Beaters) was formed in the 1960s by Selby Ntuli (vo/g) and Alec Khaoli (b), who were classmates, along with Monty Ndimande (g) and Sipho Mabuse (d). In their early career, the band was active as a "Soweto Soul" band inspired by Stax and Motown, and was recognized as one of the leading bands in the country, supporting Percy Sledge, Timmy Thomas, and Wilson Pickett in their performances in South Africa. The turning point for the band came when they toured Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia). Inspired by the struggle for independence led by Thomas Mapfumo and others, they returned to South Africa, shedding the nerl jackets they had been wearing and going on stage with Afro hair and dashikis. This reflects their rediscovery of African-ness, the contagious rhythms that make people dance, and the fertile music of the African continent, and their rebirth as African musicians wearing dashikis. Although Selby Ntuli, the group's core member, died prematurely in 1978, the group continued to produce many albums. Thandi Ntuli, Selby's niece and one of the most prominent figures in South African jazz in recent years, has this to say about Harari: "The group has been a great success, and I am very proud to have been a part of it.Harari's music is one of my goals as a young artist. It is to express myself as an African without ignoring the influences of all other music, be it classical, jazz, house, etc." The album "Harari" begins with the long spiritual song "Harari" at the beginning, reminiscent of Bob Marley & The Wailers, followed by the powerful call and response of " Push It On" and "Thiba Kamoo," the key track of the album.
