Description:
The Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 had a profound effect on the mind of composer Toshio Hosokawa. Hosokawa, who strives to "express the unity of mankind and nature and the beautiful communion through music," composed several pieces of music in response to the tragedy, conveying once again "the ferocity and horror of nature. The melody of "Mei Sou," which grows into a quiet song of grief over the rhythm of the big drum, is a memorial through music. In "After the Storm," two sopranos sing and weave a shaman's prayer. Lamentation," using a poem by Salzburg-born poet Georg Trakl, is a lament that echoes across the dark sea. (Commissioned by the Salzburg Festival in 2013, the piece was revised in 2015 for Mihoko Fujimura, who is also the soloist on this album.) Autumn Breeze" depicts the relationship between people and nature in an ensemble of shakuhachi and orchestra. These four works deeply impress all listeners and pose sharp questions.
