Description:
Rudolf Barshai (1924-2010), a popular conductor in Japan, originally began his career as an outstanding viola player before making his debut as a conductor in 1955, and is known for his achievements in premiering numerous works by Soviet composers of his era. Also known as an arranger, Barshai rearranged five of the string quartets of Shostakovich, his former teacher at the Moscow Conservatory, into "chamber symphonies," transforming the harsh sound of the originals into colorful sounds and presenting them to listeners as completely new works. This series of arrangements expands the repertoire of the chamber orchestra and suggests a new way to enjoy Shostakovich's works. The Kiev Virtuosi and Dmitri Yablonsky's performance is full of tension. Naxos Japan
