The year 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sibelius (1865–1957). While numerous recordings of Sibelius’s works are being released, this collection of orchestral works by Segerstam—with its superb program selection and performances grounded in a firm interpretation—is sure to captivate the hearts of all Sibelius enthusiasts. He was the figure who contributed most to the development of modern Finnish music, and his grand symphonies and orchestral works—richly infused with folk tales—are still widely loved today. However, only a fraction of his works are frequently heard, and even “Christian II,” included on this album, cannot be said to be widely known. That said, the incidental music *Kuolema* (“Death”), which contains the prototype of “Waltz of Sorrow,” is a relatively well-known work, but even the original form of the aforementioned “Waltz of Sorrow” is rarely performed. The “Overture in A Minor,” which begins with a heroic fanfare, is said to have been composed in a single night (though the credibility of this claim is questionable); it is an interesting piece that even features some rather humorous passages. Featuring “Twelfth Night,” based on Shakespeare’s play translated into Swedish, and the aforementioned “Christian II,” this is a wonderful album that reveals a new side of Sibelius not found in his symphonies.
