The compositional talent of the renowned conductor Markevich (1912–1983) was not limited to orchestral works. The two pieces included here are both grand and complex, and will surely go down in history. “The Great Lorenzo” is a work based on Lorenzo de’ Medici, the head of the Medici family during the height of their power in the Italian Renaissance. It is no exaggeration to say that, with his profound knowledge of scholarship and the arts, Renaissance culture flourished under his patronage. “Psalms,” composed using seven psalms, was written when Markevich was 21 years old. In order to ensure the ceaseless progression of his music, he did not hesitate to rewrite the words of the Bible, creating an extremely original and avant-garde work.
