With its jarring sounds and ornate, overly complex orchestration, Richard Strauss (1864–1949) is a composer whose grandiose music tends to divide listeners. However, the elegant chamber music works included here—composed from his teens through his late twenties—will surely help to reshape that image. This series of works was composed with Mozart and Beethoven—whom his father deeply admired—as models; in particular, the Piano Trio No. 1, written when he was just 13, is brimming with sparkling creativity and lyricism. Yet what makes him truly remarkable is that he did not simply grow older in a conventional manner. His “Arabian Dance,” composed in 1893, is strikingly reminiscent of “The Dance of the Seven Veils,” while “Little Love Song” hints at a complicated love triangle. Naxos Japan
