Woody Guthrie was a major influence on Bob Dylan. With his guitar and harmonica, Guthrie wandered the United States during the Great Depression, and based on his experiences, he sang songs such as "This land is your land," which resonated with many people by conveying the emotions of the impoverished working people. Grammy Award-winning composer Michael Doherty drove the dusty roads of Oklahoma and Texas where Guthrie once wandered, listening to nearly all of his songs, to create his own tribute, "This Land Sings This Land is Singing. The work consists of two singers, an ensemble and an announcer reading, and is written to resemble a radio program from Guthrie's era (the reading portion is omitted on this album). Doherty wrote original songs and instrumental pieces for the interludes that address themes such as the political and social climate of Guthrie's time. They are ironic and witty at the same time.
