Description:

The most acclaimed musicians of this century have come together! A multi-generational quintet work by one of the finest pianists of our time, Kenny Barron, is now available on CD/LP! A delicate and elegant piece that involves each world in a multifaceted space! Beyond This Place, a multi-generational quintet album by one of the finest pianists of our time, Kenny Barron, is now available on CD and 2LP from Artwork Records, with two bonus tracks on the LP version only. Kenny Barron, a jazz pianist born in Philadelphia, USA in 1943, has recorded numerous albums as a bandleader and sideman for artists such as Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, Freddie Hubbard, and Ron Carter over his 60+ year career. He has also worked with Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter and many others. A living legend who has garnered numerous accolades, including 11 Grammy nominations and an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music. This album, Beyond This Place, encompasses all the elements of Kenny Barron's musical world, which has been at the forefront of modern jazz for over 60 years.Nominated for a Grammy Award in 2023 for his first album on the Artwork label, the solo work "The Source," this project is a departure from the atmosphere of his previous work. In order to keep as close to orchestral composition as possible, but still retain the coloration of modern jazz, it is a hybrid quintet composition, featuring four highly acclaimed musicians of this century. Immanuel Wilkins, a rising star on saxophone; Jonathan Blake, one of the finest drummers of his generation; bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa, a longtime collaborator with Kenny Barron; and Steve Nelson, one of the most highly regarded vibraphonists of his generation. The result is a very delicate album that involves each of these formats in a multifaceted space. This album opens with "The Nearness of You," a standard number composed by Hoagy Carmichael. Performed in a quartet configuration minus Steve Nelson, Immanuel Wilkins' saxophone caresses the theme without ever becoming colorless, and Barron always displays great pianistic virtuosity. And on "We See" (a Thelonious Monk classic), which closes the album as a duo with Wilkins, Barron expresses Monk's vivacity and playfulness while going far beyond Monk's angular style and showing it here without hiding his debt to him.
