Carnival music lives on in Haiti on the western side and the Dominican Republic on the eastern side of the Caribbean island of Ispaniola! The Caribbean island of Ispaniola is ruled by Haiti on the western third and the Dominican Republic on the eastern two-thirds. In Haiti, a lively procession with bamboo trumpets (buskins), percussion music, and loud songs is held during the week of Easter, and the procession and the music itself are called Lara. Haitians who moved to the Dominican side of the island as sugar cane farmers called the procession "gaga," and the tradition has been passed down from generation to generation within the community. This album contains rare field recordings of Lara and Gaga performances made in the late 1970s. Based on an African-derived sound with strong voodoo influences, the music beautifully embodies the uplifting feelings of the normally repressed. Includes Japanese commentary/obi
