Description:

[The World of the *Missa Brevis*: A Universal Message Condensed into a Brief Composition] This album pairs exquisite Masses by Mozart and Haydn—works that, strangely enough, are rarely performed or recorded—with a new *Missa Brevis* by contemporary Belgian composer Fabian Fiorini. “Missa Brevis” means “Short Mass.” In the Catholic world of the mid-18th century, there was criticism that Mass music, when embellished with multiple movements, exceeded the appropriate length for the ritual; consequently, the Missa Brevis—a Mass that could be sung in its entirety in about 20 minutes—began to be composed. In Haydn’s “Little Organ Mass” from his middle period (here, the organ solo section of the “Benedictus”—which gives the work its subtitle—is performed on the violin), the composer employs a technique in the “Gloria” that has each soloist sing a different part of the text simultaneously, compressing the performance time to about one minute. On the other hand, the Mass in D minor, K. 65, composed by Mozart in Salzburg when he was 13 years old, is in the same key as his later *Don Giovanni* Overture and *Requiem*; it is a substantial work in which dramatic expression can already be heard throughout, all within the framework of a well-structured classical style. Alongside Fiorini’s Mass, composed in a neo-Romantic style and premiered at the 2024 Mozartiade Festival in Brussels, nine string players from the Itijan Orchestra—Brussels’ new-generation ensemble led by the Belgian prodigy Gabriel Hollander—deliver a tight and lyrical performance that fully brings out the charm of each work. Please note that in the Mozart and Haydn Masses included here, the actual performance was intended to feature Gregorian chant for the opening of the “Gloria” (“Gloria in excelsis Deo”); therefore, that section is not included on this recording.
