[Unveiling the True Value of a Mysterious German Baroque Master Who Left No Solo Recordings] Johann Michael Nicolai was a 17th-century German composer whose works are recorded in numerous manuscripts and whose published collections from his time still survive in considerable numbers, yet little is known about his life. Born in Weimar in 1629—slightly younger than Rosenmüller and Schmelzer, and slightly older than Buxtehude—he gained experience at the court of the Duchy of Saxe-Lauenburg in northern Germany, near Lübeck. he was invited to the court of the Duke of Württemberg in Stuttgart in 1655 and continued to be active there until his death in 1685. However, even more noteworthy than the scope of his career is the high quality of his surviving works. Lacheron, who introduces a wide range of little-known music for the viola da gamba—from British and German gamba consorts to 18th-century French solo pieces—has gathered here works that treat two or three violas da gamba as equals, and presents a performance that beautifully brings out the essence of Nicolai’s style, fully demonstrating the appeal of 17th-century German-style sonatas, which include a well-balanced selection of dance movements. The album also includes one sonata for the same instrumentation found in a manuscript by Gustav Düben (1628–1690), who transcribed the music of many German composers while serving the King of Sweden during the late 17th century, when Nicolai was active. From the richness of the bass to the subtle artistry of the melodic development in the upper register, please take your time to savor the charm of this music, which makes the most of the mid-to-low register.
