In 2024, the 50th anniversary of its premiere at Covent Garden in 1974, Natalia Osipova, who portrays a modern Manon with her outstanding physicality and overwhelming acting ability, and Rhys Clark, a promising principal who has been working with her for five years and whose partnership is growing ever more polished, will passionately perform. The dynamic choreography brings out the depths of the human psyche, which wavers between true love, wealth, and poverty. The outstanding supporting cast includes Alexander Campbell as Lescaut, Manon's wild brother; Mayara Magri as Lescaut's bewitching lover; and Garry Avis as the amorous Monsieur D.M. The music, a collage of Massenet compositions by Leighton Lucas and others, seems as if it were spun for this ballet.The orchestra, led by Cohen Kessels, a master of ballet music performance, plays vibrant rhythms and sweet, melancholy melodies that greatly enhance this Macmillan story ballet.
